Different Children Different Dreams

While reading this essay I thought to myself how often do I really see African American children and babies in commercials on television. The article talked about how white children are attention grabbers and are used a lot more often in commercials. Ellen Seiter talked about how the use of children is a way to suggest many of the values that advertisers routinely associate with the product they are trying to sell. One thing I thought about while reading about the examples in the reading was how children and babies may used to market and sell baby products and toys, but when it comes to spors commercials its usually more African American kids or adults. The majority of commercials on television on saturday mornings include white children, there are African American children used once in a while but usually they are out numbered by the white children. All races of children are going to be watching these television shows on saturday mornings. but companies continue to use white children in their advertisements. That was something I really never thought of growing up as a kid and watching television on saturday mornings, I was just usually interested in the show that was on and if a toy caught my attention I would watch the commercial.

Questions:
1. How would companies be viewed if they switched the role of white and african american children in advertisements?
2. Why can't african american children be viewed on the same level as white children?
