Different Children, Different Dreams

This article brings up some reasonable points and i agree to a sense that there is some stereotyping going on but i think its a little blown out of proportion. I also think that the advertising philosophy in media is to appeal to your audience. What channels do these commercials appear on? Who watches that channel? You could flip the argument for channels such as BET. Do we really need a channel for African Americans or a hispanic channel? Is there a white channel? None that i am aware of. I think people are to quick to pull out the race card for everything. When it comes down to our generation, there is very little, if not, no racism. The older generations tend to lean a certain way because they lived through the civil rights movement. Back to the article, i think the author is making something small into something big. Our country is beyond this issue and the recent election with Obama, no matter how you feel about the election republican or democrat, it was proof that our country is beyond color of skin. I won't let my personal feelings on the election get in the way of this article. The example with the 2 white children and 1 black child,if the baby commercial was 1 black boy, 1 black girl, and 1 white boy and the white boy was pushed out the commercial or obscured by the 2 black children would we be having this conversation? Im just sayin reverse the roles and do we have this converstation now? No we don't. So how come we make such a big deal when it comes to race on commercials and tv shows because people love bringing up the race card because it sparks debate. People love debate.

Discussion questions:

Reverse the roles and are we having this debate?

Why does a simple baby commercial, get turned into a race issue?

  1. couldn't it be argued that ABC, NBC and CBS are all "white channels?"
